The holiday season is officially here, and as a personal trainer and yoga instructor, I am blown away year after year at how society gets so caught up in the stress of the holidays that we kick our exercise routines and healthy eating habits to the curb. Following the debauchery of the holidays, we drag ourselves back to the gym in January, beating ourselves up for giving up our good habits and over-indulging. This roller coaster is not only damaging to our physical bodies, but also our mental and emotional states.
What’s the solution? As much as we would love it, there’s no easy button, and the best thing you can do for yourself is to not quit now. Stick with your routine even if you must modify it. I’m not saying don’t enjoy the holidays, but try to find a happy medium. Create a plan that enables you to enjoy the holiday without totally falling apart. Little things make a difference, for example, parking farther from the entrance to the store, taking the stairs more often and making wise choices in regards to food and beverages. There are many helpful websites that offer healthy food and drink swaps. Find out the amount of calories in your favorite dish or drink and decide if its worth it, or, should you chose something different? Sometimes, the holiday spirit can feel intense and we can get caught up in the magic. I say go for it occasionally, just don’t make it a habit. As with anything else, it’s all about balance and moderation. If you need assistance in anything I discussed please feel free to reach out to me. I am happy to help in anyway. I want you to be successful this holiday season and start 2018 on the right foot!
